Sony A5100 kit lens

Kit lens I have:

Start off with what I don’t like about the lens

Manual focus for video is too tricky for me to mess with so I don’t.

I’m sure someone is capable, but I don’t mess with it.

I just use the touch screen auto focus, and make sure the focus locks where I want it.

I’ve never done serious portraits with this lens, and with a variable aperture up to 3.5 I don’t have to worry too much about focus too much.

That’s it.  That’s all I don’t like about the A5100 Kit lens.

No, it is not my 70-200 Tamron for my Nikon D750.  But, that’s not a fair comparison. No kit lens is going to hold up to a premium lens.

But, they will get the job done.

I have taken some photos that I am very fond of with my A5100 kit lens.  I think they’re pretty good.

Here are some:

And, with the fact that this camera and kit lens can literally fit in my jacket pocket I’m able to take it with me everywhere.

When I go on vacation I bring this camera.  Go to the Chicago Field Muesum I bring this camera.

When people ask me what camera to buy when they’re wanting to take good photos I almost always recommend them just to use their cell phone camera.  Those are going to make most people very happy.

But, if you are more than a cell phone photographer, but not quite to the DSLR or Mirrorless camearas levels I recommend the A5100.  I know the A5100 is a mirrorless, but it isnt on the same level as with say a A6000.

With the benefit of having full manual control, and a sensor larger than your a finger nail or similiar, and being able to do short video clips it’s a good camera.

I don’t mind using my cell phone for pics, but I feel that a phone encourages me to have a lack of presence in new environments.

I’ve grown quite accustomed to being able to expirence new environments with a camera in my hand.  I’m a photographer. That’s what I do.

WIth a cell phone, and a slight case of getting distracted it’s not long before I’m pointlessly checking social media or email.

Also, using a cell phone camera that you pull the shutter on the same screen you have to tap for focus I often don’t feel I’m able to get into the composition position i need.

Anyway, if you are a photographer wanting a camera that acts like a dedicatied camera instead of using your phone than i highly recommend checking the a5100 and kit lens out.

If you are a parent looking to get good action shots of your young athlete I also recommend the a5100

If you’re just looking to get into photography to take good photos.  I recommend just sticking with your cell phone camera.

Chances are you will take more pictures with your cell phone than you will with a camera.  Plus, there’s post processing that comes with shooting photos with a camera.

All of it is fun, and I throughly enjoy it all.  However, I also know that it isnt for everyone.

If you do decide to get an a5100 and the kit lens and want to know how to send the photos from your camera to your phone i did a video on that.  You can check it out here.

Let me know down in the comments.  Do you think it’s better for someone that just wants better photos to invest in a camera, or just stick with there cell phone camera.

I look forward to hearing from you guys.  And Ill see you guys next time. Thanks!
